Melbourne’s inner west currently has a significant deficit in community-led running groups due to the lack of infrastructure, which directly impacts residents’ ability to engage in safe, year-round physical activity. The Yarraville Oval Masterplan provides a critical, timely opportunity to begin remedying this geographical inequity. While the north and east of Melbourne boast numerous dedicated running tracks and athletics facilities, data from platforms like RunHub.co highlight a severe dearth of active running infrastructure in our immediate region.
Despite this lack of formal infrastructure, the grassroots running community in Yarraville is thriving, driven entirely by the resilience of local businesses and community groups. However, their continued growth and safety are heavily constrained by our current physical environment:
- Hop Heads Run Club: Operating out of the Hop Heads bar in Yarraville, this group brings over 20+ participants together every Tuesday night. Due to a lack of facilities, they are forced to run around Cruickshank Park wearing headlamps in the pitch dark.
- The Running Company Run Club: Based out of the local specialty shoe store, this club frequently hosts major footwear brands for wear tests and community competitions, drawing crowds for special active events. I’ve personally been to launch events for new shoes for ON Running and Brooks in the last couple of months.
- Hop Nation Run Club: Operating out of the local brewery on Thursdays and select weekends, this group utilizes the Maribyrnong River paths.
- Cruickshank Park Parkrun: This free, weekly 5km event has been an incredible asset to Saturday morning community health, with large cohorts of participants heading directly to local hospitality venues like Ocab for post-run coffee. This event has well over 100 participants every week (see results page) demonstrating that the community is an active, eager and engaged market.
Each of these groups acts as an economic driver for the Yarraville village. By drawing hundreds of active participants to Anderson Street and its surrounds weekly, they inject significant revenue into local restaurants, cafes, and bars, directly supporting our small business economy.
The Proposition: A 3-Lane Perimeter Running Track
To support this booming community movement, I propose that the Yarraville Oval Masterplan incorporates a formal, dedicated running track alongside or integrated into the already proposed perimeter path. This model has been highly successful across Melbourne. For example, the Olympic Park Oval has a low-impact, 3-lane perimeter track around the main playing field. This simple addition hosts at least one major running club every single morning and most afternoons, consistently attracting over 50+ participants per session year-round supporting clubs like OSAAT, Hunter, LilBig, and Glasshouse. Similarly, the George Knott Reserve track activates the local area through community clubs like AM:PM:RC, Tanaka, Love the Run, and Pulse. EveryRunClub is so large and valuing tracks so highly that they hire Lakeside Stadium just for weekly track nights. In the west, Run West hav a weekly Track Tuesday at Aberfeldie Athletics Track.
Crucially, implementing a 3-lane perimeter track will not disrupt the core cricket or AFL functions of Yarraville Oval. Instead, it maximises the spatial efficiency of the reserve, activating the public asset during quiet hours, such as early mornings and winter weeknights, when structured field sports are not using the space.
Safety, All-Weather Accessibility, and Inclusivity
A dedicated track is vital because it provides a safe, predictable, and reliably lit space to exercise before and after standard working hours. Alternative public facilities are entirely out of range for Yarraville locals; the Hobsons Bay Council track in Newport is a 5km run/drive away (failing to add to the amenity or active transport goals of the Maribyrnong municipality), while Braybrook’s Skinner Reserve track is too distant to serve inner-west residents daily.
Adding this infrastructure directly addresses several critical council priorities:
- Safety & CPTED Principles: Cruickshank Park’s paths are notoriously dark, winding, and uneven. This creates a hazardous environment where large groups of runners wearing headlamps barrel toward other park users, inadvertently discouraging general community use for eight months of the year. By installing smart LED lighting around both the proposed Yarraville Oval track and Cruickshank Park’s circular path, the council can align with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles. Increased foot traffic creates passive surveillance, fostering a vastly safer, more welcoming environment for shift workers, vulnerable residents, and especially women exercising alone in the dark.
- All-Weather Asset Protection: I urge the council to consider a porous, all-weather synthetic or rubberized surface for this track. On wet winter days, grass and gravel perimeters quickly degrade into unusable, muddy trenches. A porous synthetic track ensures year-round usability while drastically reducing long-term turf maintenance and rehabilitation costs for the council.
- Multi-Generational Inclusivity: While a track will naturally supercharge local run clubs, its flat, impact-absorbing surface provides immense value beyond running. It offers an accessible, low-hazard walking circuit for local seniors, parents pushing prams, and residents navigating mobility aids who find uneven gravel trails impossible to safely traverse.
Conclusion
Integrating a 3-lane, all-weather running track into the Yarraville Oval Masterplan directly satisfies the Maribyrnong Council Plan goals around health equity, active wellbeing, and community safety. By facilitating more structured and unstructured exercise sessions per week, the council will actively promote a healthier community, improve social cohesion, and sustainably boost foot traffic through our beloved local business precinct.
